Mining that moves the world

Nearly 200 million tonnes of iron ore move through our Pilbara operations every year, connected by 760 kilometres of rail, and shipped to customers across the globe.

That scale is our lever. It powers the capital, the infrastructure and the real-world operating environment to test what actually works, under real heat, real dust, and real production pressure.

This is where Real Zero gets real.

  • Our operations

Our Pilbara mines, rail network and port infrastructure are among the most efficient on Earth. See how we run it.

One control room. The whole supply chain.

Autonomous trucks. Real-time data. AI-driven decisions. The HIVE runs our operations from pit to port, 24/7. This is mining re-engineered for the future.

Where our iron ore meets the world

Port Hedland is the gateway for our iron ore, and one of the busiest bulk export ports on the planet. Every tonne we produce passes through here on its way to steel mills across Asia and beyond.

We’re not waiting for heavy industry to change. We’re changing it.

We’re building the world’s first fully integrated industrial green grid. A renewable energy system designed to power our entire Pilbara operation, around the clock. No offsets. No shortcuts. Real infrastructure, scaling now.

See how we're decarbonising the Pilbara

How we're doing it

  • The Green Grid

Solar, wind, battery storage and 620km of transmission working as one connected system. By 2030 we’ll have 1.5GW solar, 800MW wind and 5GWh of battery storage. Power generated, stored and moved across the Pilbara, where it’s needed, when it’s needed.

  • Building the people behind Real Zero

Electrifying our operations changes the skills needed to run them. We’re investing now, building electrical capability across our workforce through apprenticeships, traineeships, graduate programs and on-the-job training. At peak, we expect to create up to 1,800 new electrical roles, and we’re widening access for women, young Australians and First Nations people to fill them.

  • The operating system for a renewable mine

Renewable energy doesn’t run itself. We’re building AI-driven energy management, battery intelligence software and real-time decision tools that keep operations moving while fossil fuels come out.

The technology heavy industry needs doesn’t all exist yet. We’re building it.

Through Fortescue Zero, our R&D and commercialisation arm, we develop, test and deploy zero-emissions solutions that turn Real Zero from ambition into operation. We prove it on our own sites first, under real conditions, then we take it further.

    Built for the real world.

Battery systems designed for the heat, dust and 24/7 demands of industrial operations, built to perform where standard solutions don’t last.

  • Batteries that think ahead.

Elysia turns batteries from storage into connected decision-makers. Real-time safety alerts, charging optimisation and end-of-life forecasting across electric fleets and energy systems.

  • Electric. Autonomous. Already running.

Electric drivetrains, fast charging and fleet management systems built for industrial scale. Already operating on our sites and ready to go further.

    Proving it. Then sharing it.

Advanced engineering and decarbonisation consulting for heavy industry, drawing on what we’ve already built and proved in the Pilbara to help others do the same.

From the Pilbara. To the world.

We’re not stopping at iron ore, or the Pilbara. We’re identifying and developing opportunities in critical minerals, new markets and emerging technology that will define what Fortescue becomes next.

  • Exploration in Gabon

A high-grade hematite iron ore deposit under exploration in north-east Gabon. The Belinga Project has the potential to be one of the world’s most significant undeveloped deposits.

  • Replacing coal in ironmaking

At Christmas Creek, we’re building the facility to produce green iron using green hydrogen and renewable energy instead of coal. Our ore, our energy, our infrastructure. Applied to a new kind of product.

  • Discovering what’s next

We were founded as an exploration company. That instinct still drives us. Across Australia and internationally, we’re looking for the copper, critical minerals and high-grade deposits the energy transition needs.

Real Zero.

Not net. Not offset. Not someday.

Heavy industry produces six billion tonnes of carbon emissions every year. The world has spent decades managing that number. We’re calling on governments, markets and industry to eliminate it.

Real Zero means no fossil fuels. No offsets. No accounting tricks. Emissions cut at the source, inside real operations, in real time. We’re proving it’s possible by doing it ourselves.
