Our operations
Our Pilbara mines, rail network and port infrastructure are among the most efficient on Earth. See how we run it.
Most mining companies dig things up and ship them out. We do that too.
But we’re using the scale, the capital and the operating environment of one of the world’s largest iron ore businesses to do something no one else has done. Cut fossil fuels out of heavy industry, in real operations, at real scale, profitably.
Nearly 200 million tonnes of iron ore move through our Pilbara operations every year, connected by 760 kilometres of rail, and shipped to customers across the globe.
That scale is our lever. It powers the capital, the infrastructure and the real-world operating environment to test what actually works, under real heat, real dust, and real production pressure.
This is where Real Zero gets real.

Our Pilbara mines, rail network and port infrastructure are among the most efficient on Earth. See how we run it.
Autonomous trucks. Real-time data. AI-driven decisions. The HIVE runs our operations from pit to port, 24/7. This is mining re-engineered for the future.
Port Hedland is the gateway for our iron ore, and one of the busiest bulk export ports on the planet. Every tonne we produce passes through here on its way to steel mills across Asia and beyond.

We’re building the world’s first fully integrated industrial green grid. A renewable energy system designed to power our entire Pilbara operation, around the clock. No offsets. No shortcuts. Real infrastructure, scaling now.
Solar, wind, battery storage and 620km of transmission working as one connected system. By 2030 we’ll have 1.5GW solar, 800MW wind and 5GWh of battery storage. Power generated, stored and moved across the Pilbara, where it’s needed, when it’s needed.
Electrifying our operations changes the skills needed to run them. We’re investing now, building electrical capability across our workforce through apprenticeships, traineeships, graduate programs and on-the-job training. At peak, we expect to create up to 1,800 new electrical roles, and we’re widening access for women, young Australians and First Nations people to fill them.
Renewable energy doesn’t run itself. We’re building AI-driven energy management, battery intelligence software and real-time decision tools that keep operations moving while fossil fuels come out.
Through Fortescue Zero, our R&D and commercialisation arm, we develop, test and deploy zero-emissions solutions that turn Real Zero from ambition into operation. We prove it on our own sites first, under real conditions, then we take it further.
Battery systems designed for the heat, dust and 24/7 demands of industrial operations, built to perform where standard solutions don’t last.

Elysia turns batteries from storage into connected decision-makers. Real-time safety alerts, charging optimisation and end-of-life forecasting across electric fleets and energy systems.

Electric drivetrains, fast charging and fleet management systems built for industrial scale. Already operating on our sites and ready to go further.
Advanced engineering and decarbonisation consulting for heavy industry, drawing on what we’ve already built and proved in the Pilbara to help others do the same.
We’re not stopping at iron ore, or the Pilbara. We’re identifying and developing opportunities in critical minerals, new markets and emerging technology that will define what Fortescue becomes next.
Heavy industry produces six billion tonnes of carbon emissions every year. The world has spent decades managing that number. We’re calling on governments, markets and industry to eliminate it.
Real Zero means no fossil fuels. No offsets. No accounting tricks. Emissions cut at the source, inside real operations, in real time. We’re proving it’s possible by doing it ourselves.
We’re eliminating fossil fuels from our iron ore operations, building renewable energy at scale and developing the technology heavy industry needs to decarbonise.
Big work. Real work. Happening now.
